My name is Beatriz Stuckenschmidt Maués (she/her/they/we), and I am an artist and organizer working across storytelling, photography, and textile design. Born in Brooklin, São Paulo, in 1986, I left the southern hemisphere at 19 to pursue a career in fashion.
I began my journey in Barcelona as an assistant to Buki Ebiesuwa, then moved to New York City in 2009 to work as a menswear market assistant at Vogue US and later as an assistant to stylist Melanie Ward.
My years in the fashion industry exposed me to the pervasive culture of consumerism and disposability, which led me to reflect on the negative impacts this industry has on communities, particularly in South America.
In 2018, I co-created THRIFT, an exhibition and zine aimed at expanding the conversation about waste, both within and beyond the fashion industry, with a particular focus on the relationship between countries in the Global North and Global South. The project served as a visual report on Lixão da Estrutural, once the world’s second-largest landfill, which we documented just before its closure in 2017. This profound experience drove me to shift my focus from fashion to studying the effects of trauma on both the human body and the earth.

As I continue my training to become a certified trauma practitioner, I remain connected to my roots through art, research and the practice of Capoeira Angola.
